Los Angeles, CA Reclaimed Wood Garage Door & European Shutters

Los Angeles, CA - No detail was spared on this custom European country home located in Long Beach, CA. Every single details of the home involves authentic salvaged architectural materials and elements that you would only find by traveling though the Old World European countries along the Mediterranean. Reclaimed barn lumber was used throughout the entire property as well as salvaged architectural elements such as rustic iron hardware, some of the doors and garden gates that were at one point imported from Europe and slowly collected by the client over the years just for this custom home build.

Dynamic Garage Door was commissioned in the early stages of the project to weigh in on ideas for the custom garage door, salvaged architectural garden gates and decorative window shutters. The whole project was tastefully done with intricate detailing every step of the way. One of the custom side gates we were able to reproduce with custom-made architectural hardware designed and crafted by our in-house craftsmen and designers. This is the kind of project that emphasizes our design expertise, experience and knowledge of historical European architectural doors and passage ways. With our custom designed reclaimed barn wood garage door, exquisitely handcrafted window shutters and gate retrofitting, the home's essence is exhausting enough to pinpoint every detail, it is best to take it in as a whole and enjoy the views throughout!

The barn wood garage door was designed in a simple barn style configuration with basic stile and rail trim pieces beautifully backed with tongue and grooved reclaimed wood slats. To ensure proper coloration of the silvers on the reclaimed wood, each piece was hand-selected from a large salvaged barn wood lot that came off a centuries old barn.  Furthermore, a solid reclaimed beam was used to crown the top of the custom garage door opening accentuating the beautiful natural details of the aged wood we used on the rustic style garage door. The beauty of using reclaimed wood on rustic projects such as this is the final reveal that showcases the beauty of nature's touch on wood that has been exposed to the elements for hundreds of years. It is also a wonderful way of salvaging materials that would otherwise be wasted. Additionally, reclaiming wood from old buildings and barns is helpful in slowing down deforestation throughout the world and perhaps one day completely stop deforestation. So you could say quite proudly that reclaimed wood garage doors and projects involving these materials are eco-friendly too!

As you look at every windows surrounding the home you'll notice that the windows themselves were imported from Europe and the quality is highly evident just at a glance. To parallel that beauty and high quality craftsmanship we designed and handcrafted beautiful rustic shutters that would complement all the European charm that was put into the home throughout its entirety. The custom shutters feature a rustic European style with a gorgeous deep blue milk stain on the hand wire-brushed cedar and decorative hardware. The thickness of the shutters is just right for the application making them seem functional instead of just some aftermarket add-on that simply wouldn't justify the architectural beauty of this  home. Every custom shutter was appropriately equipped with hand-forged hinge straps and respective shutter dog. Part of this project included retrofitting two authentic Old World European garden gates. One of the gates was a handcrafted iron gate that looks simple and perhaps not like a big deal. Looking closely, in person, you will notice that no welding was used to put the gate designs together as there was no welding back in those days. The entire gate is exquisitely put together by hand with bent iron strips that hold everything in place. One of our in-house blacksmiths was amazed when he saw the decorative iron gate and pointed this detail out to our designers and, of course, everyone was mesmerized and appreciative of the beautiful iron gate. The other reclaimed gate was a basic wood slatted gate, it has the aged beauty marks found in rustic homes throughout Europe. You can see all the nail holes and how the excess tip of each nail was bent over on the back to secure the slats together. We sourced out an authentic French style lever locking mechanism that is surface mounted just like in historical European doors. Yes, it also has a proper skeleton key to lock the gate. To the untrained eye, these gates might look simple or lackluster but to the savvy architectural connoisseur it is eye candy up and down!

The third element we were involved in was the custom design and manufacturing of a third garden gate that we constructed out of left over reclaimed wood used throughout the project. We borrowed some design elements from the authentic salvaged wooden gate like the iron strap  hinges which we were able to reproduce in-house. We also, custom-designed a specific ring pull we found in a rustic architectural book from Tuscany. A European roller latch and mortise lock mechanism was used and it made the gate look, feel and function exactly like a real gate pulled out of a historical European countryside home.
